What Is a Hernia?

  • Under your skin is a strong supporting layer called fascia.
  • Think of fascia as an inner support layer that helps hold everything in place.
  • A hole or weak spot in this layer allows fat or intestine to push through, sometimes creating a bulge beneath the skin.
  • Not all hernias cause a visible bulge. Some may cause pain or discomfort in the area, even when no lump can be seen.

The opening is the defect. The bulge is what pushes through it.

Simplified cross-section showing intestine pushing through an opening in the fascia, the strong supporting layer beneath the skin, creating a bulge. Labels identify the bulge, skin, fascia, and opening.

How Does Robotic Hernia Repair Work?

Dr. Lamb controls the robotic instruments throughout the operation.

  • Small incisions allow access to the hernia
  • The bulging tissue is returned to the abdomen
  • The opening in the fascia is repaired
  • Mesh may reinforce the repair when appropriate

The approach is tailored to your hernia, prior surgery, and overall health.
